The Emotional Debt of Depression: Why Recovery Feels Like Climbing Out of a Hole

The Weight of Three Lost Years

In December 2019, I experienced a loss that shattered me. What I thought was just grief stretched into something deeper—months became years. I wasn’t just sad; I was drowning in a dirty pit, but I didn’t realize it.

For over three years, I drifted through life in a fog, convinced I was failing rather than recognizing I was sick. Responsibilities piled up. Unanswered messages turned into shame and self-hate. Self-care became a brief distraction rather than real relief. Depression wasn’t just stealing my present—it was emotional debt, an overwhelming backlog of everything I had left undone.

By January 2023, I had nothing left. I decided to end it. But I was stopped, taken away, and released. At a crossroads, I chose to try living again—for reasons I won’t go into here. Seeking help led to diagnoses of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), complex PTSD (cPTSD), and ADHD, finally giving me answers. I wasn’t lazy or broken—I had been unwell.

But knowing that didn’t erase the damage. Three years of untreated depression left me three years behind. I’m still climbing as it’s not just the three years of severe depression. I have had depressive periods throughout my life, like many of you. Depression isn’t just suffering in the moment—it’s the weight of neglect, avoidance, and shame. This article is for anyone stuck in that hole, wondering how to begin again. Because I’ve been there. 

And step by step, the debt can be repaid.

Section 1: Understanding Emotional Debt – The Accumulation of “Overdue” Life Responsibilities

Depression doesn’t just take away your happiness—it steals your ability to maintain your life. Tasks that once seemed simple—answering messages, doing the laundry, showering—start to feel impossible. As responsibilities pile up, they don’t just sit there. They gain weight.

Much like financial debt, emotional debt grows over time. The longer things go undone, the more overwhelming they feel, and the harder it becomes to start again. What might have been a simple five-minute task last week now feels like an impossible challenge.

What is Emotional Debt?

Just like unpaid bills rack up late fees and interest, emotional debt accumulates the longer it’s ignored. What starts as a few small undone tasks snowballs into an overwhelming burden that feels impossible to pay off.

  • Unfinished tasks: Bills go unpaid, emails pile up, dishes sit in the sink.
  • Neglected relationships: Messages go unanswered, friends fade away, and isolation grows.
  • Self-care disappears: Basic hygiene, meals, and doctor’s appointments become overwhelming.
  • Deadlines and obligations slip: Work, school, and personal responsibilities fall behind.

Why Does Depression Create This Debt?

Depression is more than just sadness—it fundamentally alters your brain’s ability to initiate and follow through on tasks.

  • Energy and motivation are drained.
    • Depression feels like moving through quicksand—everything takes more effort than it should.
    • Simple tasks become exhausting, leading to avoidance.
  • The brain deprioritizes non-essential activities.
    • When struggling to survive, things like chores and socializing feel unimportant.
    • This isn’t a conscious choice—your brain is rationing its limited energy.
  • The avoidance cycle begins.
    • Each undone task feels bigger and more shameful.
    • Avoidance brings temporary relief but worsens the long-term burden.
    • The heavier it gets, the more impossible it seems to start again.

The Invisible Cost of Emotional Debt

Unlike financial debt, emotional debt isn’t obvious to others.

  • The pressure builds quietly.
    • No one sees the unopened mail, the missed calls, or the untouched to-do lists weighing you down.
    • You may look fine on the surface while internally drowning.
  • Shame compounds the debt.
    • Why can’t I just do this?”
    • “Everyone else manages—what’s wrong with me?”
    • Self-blame makes the debt feel like a personal failure rather than a symptom of depression.

The Path Forward: Recognizing the Debt Without Letting It Define You

If you’ve accumulated emotional debt, you’re not alone. And you’re not broken. Depression makes it easy to fall behind, but it doesn’t mean you’re incapable of moving forward.

  • The key isn’t repaying it all at once—it’s breaking the cycle of avoidance.
  • Small steps are the way out—momentum builds faster than you think.
  • Emotional debt is real, but it’s not permanent.
  • You are not past the point of recovery.

Depression makes you believe you’re buried, but in reality, you are not stuck—you’re just carrying too much. And little by little, you can start to let go.

    • Rather than seeing struggles as part of an illness, shame makes them feel like defects.
    • Instead of motivating action, it reinforces the belief that trying is pointless.
  • The result? Avoidance.
    • Rather than facing the discomfort of catching up, the easiest response is to do nothing.
    • But the longer things go untouched, the greater the guilt and shame become.
    • This creates a self-reinforcing cycle—the more you avoid, the worse you feel, and the worse you feel, the more you avoid.

Avoidance Loops: The Psychological Equivalent of Minimum Payments

Avoidance is depression’s most effective trap. It tricks you into thinking you’re relieving stress by pushing things off, when in reality, you’re only delaying the inevitable while accumulating more emotional interest.

  • How avoidance loops start:
    • You don’t reply to a message → It feels too awkward to respond late → You never respond at all.
    • You miss a bill → Late fees pile up → You avoid checking your account.
    • You put off cleaning → The mess grows overwhelming → It feels impossible to start.
  • The consequences of avoidance:
    • Small tasks grow into huge burdens.
    • Anxiety increases because responsibilities don’t disappear—they just get heavier.
    • Each avoided action reinforces the belief that you’re incapable of handling life.
  • Breaking the cycle:
    • Recognizing avoidance as a temporary relief that leads to long-term stress.
    • Understanding that tackling one small thing is more effective than waiting for the “right moment” to do everything.
    • Finding ways to reduce decision fatigue—automating tasks, setting timers, or having accountability partners.

Learned Helplessness: When the Debt Feels Impossible to Pay Off

One of the cruelest tricks of depression is convincing you that nothing you do will make a difference. This mindset—learned helplessness—turns emotional debt into something that feels impossible to repay.

  • What is learned helplessness?
    • Repeated failures (or perceived failures) make it seem like trying isn’t worth it.
    • The belief that effort leads to disappointment, so it’s safer not to try at all.
    • Even when change is possible, depression convinces you it’s not.
  • How it keeps you stuck:
    • “I’ll never catch up, so why bother?”
    • “Even if I start, I’ll just fail again.”
    • “It’s too late to fix things now.”
  • How to challenge it:
    • Start small. Depression thrives on the idea that change must be drastic. 
      • Instead, prove to yourself that small actions matter.
    • Look for past successes, no matter how small. 
      • Even brushing your teeth after days of neglect is a win.
    • Create proof that effort pays off. 
      • Instead of focusing on what’s undone, focus on the moments where action—even tiny action—made life easier.

Breaking Free from the Traps: Reclaiming Your Life, One Step at a Time

Emotional debt feels permanent, but it isn’t. When you’re buried under years of avoidance, self-doubt, and unfinished responsibilities, it’s easy to believe that you’ll never climb out. But that belief—that you’re too far gone, too late, too broken—isn’t reality. It’s depression lying to you. Guilt, shame, and avoidance aren’t truths about who you are; they are symptoms of the illness you’ve been fighting. And like any illness, healing is possible.

The good news? You don’t have to fix everything at once. In fact, trying to do that will only make the weight feel heavier. The first step isn’t catching up—it’s stopping the cycle from getting worse. It’s choosing to act, even in the smallest way, instead of staying frozen.

  • Small actions build momentum.
    • Recovery isn’t one grand, sweeping effort—it’s a series of tiny choices.
    • Every single step forward, no matter how small, disproves the lie that effort doesn’t matter.
    • You don’t need to climb out of the hole in one leap; you just need to find one foothold.

And even if you can’t see the progress yet, every small act of self-care, every moment of effort, every choice to keep going is proof that you are already climbing out.

Emotional debt isn’t repaid overnight, and recovery isn’t about rushing to “catch up” with life. It’s about creating a sustainable path forward—one where you’re not just surviving, but slowly rebuilding, with less weight on your shoulders.

The most important thing to remember? You are not beyond saving. No matter how long you’ve been stuck, no matter how much feels undone, progress is always possible.

1. Redefining Success – Small Wins Over Big Fixes

Depression convinces you that unless you can fix everything, it’s not worth trying. But real progress happens in small, steady steps.

  • Set “low-bar” goals that feel achievable.
    • Instead of “I need to clean my whole house,” try “I will clear one small space.”
    • Instead of “I need to fix all my relationships,” try “I will send one message.”
  • Celebrate every step forward.
    • Success isn’t about speed—it’s about consistency.
    • Every small action is proof that you are capable of moving forward.
  • Accept that some things may remain unfinished.
    • Not everything has to be “made up” to move on.
    • Focus on what will serve you now, not what’s already past.

2. Breaking Free From the “All-or-Nothing” Trap

Depression makes it easy to fall into extremes—either you do everything, or you do nothing. But the truth is, every bit of progress counts, even if it’s imperfect.

  • Progress doesn’t have to be linear.
    • Some days you’ll get a lot done. Other days, just getting out of bed is a victory.
    • That’s normal. Moving forward doesn’t mean never slipping back.
  • Partial success is still success.
    • Washing half the dishes is better than washing none.
    • Responding to one message is better than ignoring all of them.
    • Doing something is always better than doing nothing.
  • Make “good enough” your new standard.
    • A slightly messy room is still more functional than an overwhelming disaster.
    • A short check-in with a friend is still a connection.
    • Progress is about lightening the weight, not achieving perfection.

3. Building Routines That Support You, Not Drain You

Rebuilding your life after depression isn’t about willpower—it’s about systems. Making things easier for yourself increases the chance that you’ll follow through.

  • Lower decision fatigue.
    • Reduce the mental energy needed for daily tasks.
    • Prep simple meals, keep a “default” outfit, or set up reminders.
    • Fewer choices mean less overwhelm.
  • Use structure as support, not pressure.
    • A loose plan (e.g., “I’ll do laundry on Sundays”) is helpful.
    • A rigid, perfectionist plan (e.g., “I must clean everything today”) is self-defeating.
    • Allow flexibility—your schedule should help, not punish.
  • Make self-care automatic.
    • If you struggle with remembering basic needs, pair them with existing habits.
    • Example: Brush your teeth while waiting for coffee.
    • Example: Drink water every time you check your phone.

4. Finding Support – You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Recovery doesn’t have to be a solo journey. The more you can lean on support systems, the easier it is to break free from emotional debt.

  • Seek understanding, not judgment.
    • The right people won’t shame you for what you’ve struggled with.
    • Talking about your experience can help lift the burden of isolation.
  • Professional help can make a difference.
    • Therapy, medication, or coaching can provide tools and perspective.
    • If you don’t know where to start, a small step (even just looking up options) is progress.
  • Accountability helps, even in small ways.
    • A friend to check in with can provide gentle encouragement.
    • Even virtual communities can offer motivation and support.

5. Looking Ahead – The Future is Still Yours

It’s easy to feel like the past has defined you, like the years lost to depression have set your future in stone. But you are not your past. You are not your mistakes, your missed opportunities, or the things left undone.

  • You are still here. And that means you still have a chance to rebuild.
  • The life you want is still possible, even if it takes time.
  • Step by step, you are moving forward. And that is enough.

No matter how deep the debt, there is always a way out.

And you, right now, are already taking the first step.

Conclusion: Climbing Out of the Hole, One Step at a Time

Recovering from depression isn’t about paying everything back at once—it’s about breaking the cycle of avoidance and proving to yourself, one small step at a time, that progress is possible.

At first, it feels impossible. The weight of everything left undone presses down, and the guilt, shame, and exhaustion make even the smallest actions seem pointless. Depression convinces you that if you can’t fix everything, there’s no point in trying at all. But here’s the truth: Every step forward—no matter how small—is progress.

  • Washing one dish is progress.
  • Sending one message is progress.
  • Getting out of bed, even if it’s just to sit somewhere else, is progress.
  • Choosing to believe, even for a moment, that tomorrow can be better—that’s progress too.

You don’t need to erase the past. You don’t need to fix everything overnight. You just need to start moving forward, little by little, until the weight begins to lift.

The climb may be slow. Some days, you may slip back. But you are still moving. And the more you move, the lighter the burden becomes. The tasks that once felt impossible begin to feel manageable. The shame that once kept you frozen starts to loosen its grip. Little by little, step by step, you realize that the future isn’t as out of reach as depression made it seem.

Emotional debt is real. It is overwhelming. But it is also repayable. 

You are not too far gone. 

You are not broken. 

And you are not alone in this.

No matter how deep the hole feels, you are already climbing out. And that is enough.

FROM ‘NOW’ INTO STILLNESS

Is the present moment a problem or an opportunity for you? So often in the past, I struggled with the “isness” of the happening in the “Now”, but of course our lives are always happening in the “Now”. Fear would grip me with panic of the “What ifs”, driving my beliefs of a problematic outcome or future. I had so much resistance and felt so powerless.

I found in this Depressed Anonymous program a path of freedom, while journeying along the path. New beliefs began to develop. New attitudes of hope began to grow. Opportunities for spiritual solutions manifested from problems to challenges, to opportunities.

The ‘God of my understanding’ stills the ruminations of despair.A quieter mind softens my perceptions. This new presence takes on a formlessness of love, peace and happiness.

I have a new gratitude for the falling away of an old miserable sense of myself. I discovered God’s image in my true nature of beingness. This materializes as the same “I am” of peace and happiness living in a timeless “NOW”, AKA: KINGDOM of HEAVEN WITHIN.

I love the quote “uncover, discover and recover”, struggling now is in the past. What a blessing even they have turned into! “Now” is a lovely place to live where the sunlight of the spirit is always present, even when a few clouds may pass by. Enjoy your journey.

Two Questions

Many times I am asked the same two questions and I always give the questioner the same two answers.

The first question: “How come you keep coming to meetings, though you say you are not depressed?”

My reply to the questioner: “Let me ask you why you go to the gym three times a week”

His answer. “Well I go to keep in shape.”

My question: “Well you look healthy enough to me. I mean, you tell me you’ve never felt better.”
“Ok” I say, “but why continue to go to the gym, since you look healthy and you say that you feel so great.”

“It’s so simple” he says. “I continue to go three times a week to keep in shape and maintain the progress that the Doctor says I am making.”

“That’s interesting” I say. That’s the same reason I continue to go to meetings. I keep in shape, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, not to mention how I can help others find the hope that is now mine. My Doctor tells me I’m looking better, happier and that I should keep doing whatever I’m doing, ’cause it’s working!”

The second question is one I am asked time and again. “Doesn’t going to all those depression meetings get you depressed? I mean, listening to all those problems? That sure would depress me.”

Here is what I tell all those who ask this question.

I tell them “that no, actually I look forward to my meetings. I always feel energized by going to a Depressed Anonymous meeting. I feel, by listening to others, and hearing their stories, I feel they are telling my story as well. Here, I am not alone. I am with people just like me. Each of us attending the meetings are at different places in our lives. We are here because we believe there is a solution for me, using the spiritual principles of recovery. The more they read the DA literature, talk to each other, they find tools to overcome their depression. They feel the energy, the peace and hope which they receive from each other at the meetings.

The meetings don’t dwell on our depression, as much as we dwell on the power of the Twelve Steps. Here is what I love about the meetings, I see people growing with every meeting. Even their faces begin to soften – they have a smile now. A few weeks previous, they had nothing but hurt to feel.

Again, the reason I go to meetings is to get a boost. I get another dose of hope. I am only as isolated as I choose to be. I now can choose to live and feel differently.

Find your plan of recovery (find a Depressed Anonymous meeting), and stick to it. Get into action. Seek out a DA member to talk with, and you’ll be on a journey that will continue to bring peace, hope and a fellowship with you as long as you wish.

SAFE PLACE TO FALL

i love when one of my Depressed Anonymous friends says that a Depressed Anonymous meeting room is a “safe” place to fall. She describes it as an all accepting place with friends who truly understand what you are talking about. A place where you don’t have to feel ashamed to have mental illness or discuss depression at length! She says when she walks into the room and takes a seat she knows that the love and the anonymity of the group will provide her a safe place to discuss what’s happening in her life with her son and the bizarre situations bringing depressive thoughts. No place else has she ever found such a place she says. The bonds made with new friends who can speak the language of depression has been an amazing blessing. She says she never knew there could be such a place. A place where she truly can give details of her life, shed tears and not feel ashamed. Discuss her meds, her dark thoughts and ask for help without ensuring failure! Thus she says Depressed Anonymous meetings are a safe place to fall! Bringing her a comfort she didn’t know before. Sometimes we just need friends who truly understand and can relate to our depression. Especially living in a world where people tell us to just get up and go out and we will feel better. It’;s a safe place to be with people who can relate to feeling suicidal or being so down and not wanting to get out of bed. This “miracle of the group” is what makes it such a safe place to “fall,”: Thank God for depression support group where we can meet wonderful friends who are there when we need the help, and who totally understands depression.”

Misery is an option

 

 

”  We must be willing to let go of all thoughts that tell us that we will never get well. These are the same thought that have imprisoned us over the years. We now listen to the God of our understanding and proceed with the belief that what we hold about the world on the outside of us is determined and governed by the world that is lived within us.

We are in a brand new way, on  a new path, and find ourselves committed to a fresh belief that something powerful is starting to blossom within me. A peace that surpasses all understanding is beginning to be born as we learn to relax and wait and listen for that still small voice.  We pray that the God of our understanding make a way out of this desert of misery just as it has already created a way for those of us who live in the fellowship.  Our thoughts move  inside  us with light and peace. ”

CLARIFICATION OF THOUGHT

I realized that with time and work on myself, I gradually realized that I didn’t have to live with the self-bashing  thoughts that continually circled around in my head.  It was only til I got involved with the 12 Step program of recovery that my mind found peace and calm.  The ruminations and my  up and down erratic thinking   began to smooth  out while my moods began spiraling  upwards and my self-worth went up  as well.

It was a fact that my ruminations were an effort by my mind to find the answer to why I was so depressed. It was like a dog chasing its tail. Let me tell you, that gets old after  awhile. When my physical self began to wear down I knew I needed help. No longer did I want to keep myself in a “misery mode” and so I did something that I never did before. I reached out to a 12 Step mutual aid group in my community and there I found a way out of the  misery thoughts that  kept circling in my mind.   The Depressed Anonymous group provided me with a miracle, namely., that I could come and share my pain and my isolation with folks just like  myself. They were becoming free and they promised me the same freedom.  Now I have the tools for overcoming my sadness and misery. That was 33 years ago.  They promised me I could change. They were right.

The healing shows on the faces of all those who keep coming back to meetings

THE TENTH  WAY to leave the prison of depression. #10 of 15.

I know that with time and work I will get better and out of my depression. I believe that though I might feel helpless, I am not hopeless. I will make a decision to get better today!”

One of  the most heartening phenomenon of our 12 step program for persons depressed is to see how quickly healing becomes apparent to those who keep coming back to meetings. The healing shows on the faces of all those who keep coming back to meetings.They commit themselves to getting better. The work that one has to engage in is a deep desire to quit sadding  themselves. This means that a person depressed really must make a commitment to themselves, that with time and work, they can leave the prison of their own depression.

This statement of belief is so important that it, like the rest of the 15 ways to leave the prison of depression provides hope for those still suffering from depression. Just by coming to the meetings, even when we don’t feel like moving out of our isolation and comfort zone. This is in itself an investment that must be made if we are to reap the dividends of healing which can be ours. The program works by investing your time and energy in it.

Depressed Anonymous provides a step-by-step program of recovery and doesn’t talk in vague generalities about your own depression experience. Actually,  the program offers a map where you can walk out of your past filled with negative thoughts and  behaviors  creating your own new hopeful lifestyle. The Depressed Anonymous mutual aid  group is the  “miracle”  incentive for getting ourselves motivated   and living with hope. The group provides a continued acceptance and support for your life. The purpose of the 12 steps is to free ourselves from the debilitating isolation and pain of our sadness. We realize now that it is by accepting responsibility for our physical, emotional and spiritual care of self that predicts the hope filled long-term effect of a life lived without depression.

First of all, what gains consciousness is to be aware of  one’s  own need to discover what there is about myself that I do not find acceptable, good and  wholesome. Secondly,  preparation. I am aware of how I have depressed myself by the faulty beliefs that I’ve held about myself over the past years. I now know that part of the way I feel is due to the way I have automatically talked to myself throughout the day. I now realize that my feelings about myself have continually been very negative and emotional laden. Now I take action. I intend today to replace all negative statements that I make about myself, they are like waving a red flag  before my eyes. Every time I call myself stupid or put myself down mentally, I will substitute  affirmations such as the following:  I will build a new life for myself. I am strong today. I have the courage to go through this experience. I will no longer blame myself or others for my depression. I do not have to wait for someone to make me feel better, as I can do this myself if I choose to do so. And this will   sustain me and not just for today but every day of my life.  I’m going to tolerate my imperfections while at  the same time refusing to feel sorry for myself.  I am going to make myself accountable for how I feel… and not blame it on someone else.”

“Deep down in every man,  woman and child is the fundamental idea of a God.  It may be obscured by calamity, by pump, by worship of other things, but in some form or other it is there. For faith in a power greater than ourselves, and miraculous demonstrations of that power in human lives are facts as old as man himself.

“Faith may often be given through inspired teachings or a convincing personal example of its fruits. It may sometimes be had through reason. For instance, many clergymen believe that St. Thomas Aquinas actually proved God’s existence by sheer logic. But what can one do when all these channels fail? This was my own grievous dilemma.

“It was only when I came fully to believe I was powerless over alcohol or depression, only when I appealed to the God who just might exist, that I experienced a spiritual awakening. This freedom-giving experience came first, and then faith followed afterwards-a gift indeed!”

What is the power of Depressed Anonymous?


“Well,  first let me say that when I first started attending Depressed Anonymous, I went for s couple of months and then stopped. I stopped going because my depression was so bad that I didn’t  want to leave my apartment. I didn’t want to be around or talk to anyone. I just didn’t want to do anything except crawl in a hole somewhere and isolate myself from everything. Then after about six weeks of isolation, I called the residential treatment center where I had been a client to see if I had received any mail there and one of the members of the DA group where I attend answered the phone. I spent a few minutes talking to her and there was something in her voice that told me  that for some reason, it was important for me to be at the meeting. I attended the next Depreseed Anonymous meeting. After the meeting was over, I suddenly realized the importance  and power of Depressed Anonymous.

So what is the power of Depressed Anonymous? For me, it is just like attending that first meeting. I was a little scared and apprehensive at first, but then I found the Depressed Anonymous meeting was a place to go where there were other depressed people just like me. They could relate to and understand what I was going thr0ugh. They didn’t judge me or think of me as crazy. I was accepted.

Another power of Depressed Anonymous is the miracle fo the group and what each person brings to the group. I have seen our fellowship get stronger and grow. I have developed many friendships that I can depend on for support and understanding. I have watched some  of the newcomers that have kept coming back grow and improve. Even something as simple as a smile when there was none before.  The miracle of the group empowers and energizes me.

The most important power of Depressed Anonynous is hope. Hope that we will not be locked into the prison of depression forever and that there is a way out for each of us. A hope that our Higher Power will work the miracle through us and that we will find our own happiness. I have hope that our heart and minds will know love and peace like we have never known or felt before.  The power of Depressed  Anonymous works for me.  I hope and pray that it works for you. Keep coming back!

Empowerment comes from being informed

 

Empowerment comes  from being informed and making choices that help us change our lives for the better.  When I came to a Depressed Anonymous meeting I am making a first major step- namely, that I admit my presence at the group meeting that my life is out of control.  My compulsion to depress myself is at the root of my inability to take on the challenge of living life with risk and enthusiasm. But how can I possibly say that I want to depress myself? We are not blaming ourselves  here but are taking responsibility for our own feelings, behavior and thinking. Now that I am conscious of some negative patterns of my own behavior I can get on with learning new strategies for my own healing. With the heartfelt prayer of a monk, I now understand it is by sharing the story of my life – and with the conviction that someone is there to listen, that this can in time help me make it out of my prison of fear and sadness.

I can be empowered by taking the bull by the horn and choosing each new day, one day at a time and start to feel different. I now have the support of the group – support from people who have walked where I am walking.

I am investing in myself. I am making my recovery my highest priority. I may have been on all the antidepressant medications -I  may have seen all the best counselors, psychiatrists and doctors but now finally I am going to a room full of depressed people –  people who understand me and what I am going through!

These people I discover are investing in themselves. What will I find there? I will find some of the most caring people on the face of the earth. Some of the group will have been coming for months, and they say that they are having more good days than bad and it’s getting better. The more meetings they attend the better they feel and the more support they receive. They are feeling empowered. It’s the miracle of the group. Instead of living with a compulsion to repeat old negative and life negating thoughts and feelings we now have a compulsion to live with hope plus a desire for a brand new way of living — and not just the way that  we  once talked to ourselves.

We are going to get a new life. And here is how.

I now feel that that I am getting better learning how not to repeat my old way of thinking, feeling and believing and isolating myself when I fear –whatever. I now know that with work and patience I will get better. For most of us, it has taken us a few years to get here (depressed) so why not take the plunge today and work toward getting better–one day at a time – one meeting at a time —  and using the “tools” of the program.

It has only been when I began to examine the way I talked to myself (negatively) and how I gradually isolated myself from a life lived in serenity and hope,  that I realized I could change this pattern of diminishing myself . Others were doing it and so why couldn’t I? And so can you!
